ACT- a college readiness assessment is a standardized test for high school achievement and college admissions
Associate's Degree- an undergraduate degree awarded after completion of a program of study normally after 2 years
Bachelor's Degree- an undergraduate degree awarded after completion of a program of study normally after 4 years
College adviser- a staff member or professor to help you reach your educational and career goals
Credit Hour- the credit or point value of a course; many colleges charge tuition based on how many credit hours you enroll in (12-18 hours is usually considered "full-time")
EFC- Expected Family Contribution s a measure of your family’s financial strength and is calculated according to a formula established by law. Your family’s taxed and untaxed income, assets, and benefits (such as unemployment or Social Security) are all considered in the formula. Also considered are your family size and the number of family members who will attend college during the year. The information you report on your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is used to calculate your EFC.
FASFA-The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a form that is prepared annually by students to determine their eligibility for student financial aid.
Fraternity- A group of men in an organization or club; including companionships and brotherhoods dedicated to the religious, intellectual, academic, physical or social pursuits of its members.
Grants- FREE money awarded (normally based on need) through the FAFSA that does not have to be repaid
HBCU- Historically Black College or University
Intramural- Recreational sports through a college or university
ITV- Interactive Television Course
Loans- Money borrowed from the government or a bank that must be repaid with interest!
Major- is a group of courses required by a college in order to receive a degree – an area you specialize in
Master of Arts- postgraduate degree, involving lectures, examination, and a dissertation based on independent research
Minor- secondary academic discipline a student specializes in- less classes than a major
Scholarship-a grant or payment made to support a student's education, awarded on the basis of academic or other achievement. Does not have to be repaid!
Sorority- A group of women in an organization or club (social or service orientated) dedicated to the religious, intellectual, or academic pursuits of its members
Transcript- Official records of a students grades, courses, and test scores
Work Study- An on campus job that can be put towards financial aid
